A fully integrated optimization framework for designing a complex geometry offshore wind turbine spar-type floating support structure

Abstract. Spar-type platforms for floating offshore wind turbines are considered suitable commercial farm deployment. To reduce the hurdles of such systems becoming competitive, in situ aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations applied to support conceptual design optimization by including transient and non-linear loads. For reasons flexibility, utilized framework problem modularly structured so that setup can be both an initial study bringing innovative floater configurations light a subsequent obtaining detailed designs. In this paper, spar 5 MW turbine is used as basis. The approach generating but very comprises segmentation cylinder into three parts, specification freer formulation with fewer restrictions on geometry, allowance alternative ballast materials. structure focuses primarily cost reduction, expressed terms objective minimize structural material. results demonstrate significant potential savings when manufacturing strategies considered.
